Chinese citizens mobilized to support Cuba against Covid-19

Chinese citizens who studied in Cuba are organizing donations and purchasing medical materials to support the Caribbean island to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, in a gesture of gratitude for their training there.

Chen Ke, who launched the campaign, told Global Times that since March 28, they have raised 129,000 yuan (18,193 dollars) and 220 people, mostly former students in Cuba, are involved in the initiative.

‘We are grateful to Cuba for funding our education, and we hope to give back to this generous country,’ Chen Ke said.

The 30-year-old man said that Cuba is his second hometown, lauded its health system, and denounced the obstacles the island has to face to access the necessary supplies to fight Covid-19, due to the sanctions and the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States.

Chen is one of more than 300,000 Chinese youths who have benefited from scholarships to study Spanish and medical sciences in Cuba since 2006.
