Doors open to the XVIII International Festival in Cuba

With the seventh art of the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec as special guest, the event evaluates about 20 works that opt to the Grand Prize bearing the name of the famous creator, who died in 1998 and whose 101st birthday was celebrated last March 8th.

The theoretical seminar included new ways of making documentaries, using mobile phone, information and communication technologies, in addition to the amalgamation of this branch and fiction in the creative work of the filmmakers of this northern region.

In this city and in Turquino, in the emblematic town of El Cobre, works from Cuba, Argentina, the United States, Chile, Spain, Canada and Mexico are screened, along with samples of the Noticiero Icaic Latinoamericano, declared World Memory by Unesco.

The jury of this 18th edition is headed by the Venezuelan Ivenny Marcano and the Mexican Saudhi Batalla, respectively, for the documentaries and projects, while several national and city institutions value the pieces in competition to grant the collateral awards.

The event will be held until Thursday 12, and the decisive collaboration of the Office of Quebec in Havana and particularly of its director, Johanne Desnoyers, has been recognized.

A significant moment was the presentation of the magazine Arte y compromiso, a century of Santiago Alvarez, with a detailed compilation of the life and work of the Master of documentaries and testimonies of relevant intellectuals, among which Alfredo Guevara and Eusebio Leal stand out.
