Reynaldo García Zapata Designated as Provincial People’s Power Assembly Speaker

The recent Fourth Special Session of the Provincial People’s Power Assembly in Havana saw the election of 48 year-old Industrial Engineer Reynaldo García Zapata for the top governmental body’s Speaker.
The new leader has been grass-root delegate of the People’s Power since 1995 and is today member of Havana’s 10 de Octubre municipality People’s Power Assembly.
Due to his experience and work in the government system he held some responsibilities as district President, Vice-speaker and Speaker of the Provincial People’s Power Assembly in Santiago de Cuba.
Among other merits, he stands out as member of Cuba’s Communist Party Central Committee elected in the Seventh Congress of that body.
García Zapata acknowledged the work done by former speaker Martha Hernández Romero during her five-year term in office and urged the delegates to continue to work in the improvement of the People’s Power System.
He referred to the responsibility of that government body in the construction of the basis for a thriving and sustainable socialism, defined by the country’s President Raúl Castro Ruz.
For her part, First Secretary of the Party and member of the politburo and Vice-President of the Councils of State and Ministers in Havana Mercedes López Acea called the people of Havana to defend identity, and the city’s history, committed with the leaders of the Revolution and praised the social and cultural benefits of this capital as Wonder City.
The Session of the Assembly was also attended by National People’s Power Assembly Vice-speaker Ana Maris Machado and Historian of the city Eusebio Leal Spencer, among other government and party officials.
