The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) demanded respect for the sovereignty of Venezuela and other progressive governments in Latin America faced with the continuing imperialist attacks using the local Right and theirfront men as puppets.
Eleven nations, a third of the members of the Organization of American States (OAS), whose General Assembly was on the 13th and 14th, met a few days earlier in Caracas, where they set positions before the aggression suffered by authorities government and the Venezuelan people, while in unison executing a parliamentary coup against the president in Brazil, now separated from office, Dilma Rousseff.
The 5th Political Council of ALBA, composed of foreign ministers founded by ex-Presidents of Cuba, Fidel Castro, and Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, supported the constitutional government of President Nicolas Maduro in his persistence to preserve peace and guarantee democratic constitutional rule in that country.
At present, the Venezuelan opposition withdrew from a dialogue driven by the Union of South American Nations based in the Dominican Republic, as proof that is not interested in peace but the overthrow of the Bolivarian Revolution and the ouster of Maduro.
Also a few days ago, the Secretary General of the OAS, Uruguayan Luis Almagro summoned personally, because he is forbidden to do so as an institution, member nations to implement in Venezuela the so-called Democratic Charter, which gives way to a military intervention in the South American nation.
Almagro was rejected by the States represented at the OAS for his attitude as ally to the United States, also part of that mechanism which has never defended a cause, decided to establish a dialogue of understanding between the Venezuelan government and the opposition, organized by UNASUR and former presidents of Panama, Martin Torrijos, Dominican Republic, Leonel Gonzalez, and Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain.
During the meeting of ALBA in Caracas, the Foreign Minister of Ecuador, Guilllaume Long warned that the mass media of the Right was faking its supposed impartiality and now occupies a political role to destabilize governments and confuse the people.
Long, who also referred to the strength of ALBA within the OAS, as its members make up a third of the membership, urged reflecting on the role of the media in the political situation of the region and its attacks on progressive governments over the last decade and a half.
The Ecuadorian minister said that “an international media campaign to attack Venezuela” is evident … “the international media, he said, seek to legitimize interventionist actions” and it is not accidental but is “a very well thought out and orchestrated exercise.”
Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, another of the speakers confirmed Cuba’s commitment to continued collaboration in all circumstances with Venezuela, which began after the revolutionary triumph of Chavez. Currently, there are thousands of Cubans as partners in various areas, including health, education, sports and culture.
At the end of the meeting, the ALBA Political Council issued a statement on the rejection of “the conduct of Mr. Luis Almagro (…), who has taken an interventionist role in the internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”.
We will remain alert to any initiative that threatens the constitutional stability of the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to act accordingly in defence of peace and tranquillity in our region, the text says.
As expected, the 11 members of ALBA will play a leading role in the next General Assembly of the OAS, in which – analysts indicate – Almagro’s attitude and position against Venezuela will be an issue on the agenda.
