Julio Antonio Mella could have followed the luck of those who are favored through life; however, he chose as his fate, the commitment with men who needed his fight

By Rosa Pérez López

Julio Antonio Mella could be born in Olympia. However men were suffering so many injustices on March 25, 1903, that he decided to fight against those injustice on Earth. Julio Antonio Mella could be a semi-god; however he preferred to be a man of his time and take up the redeeming task of facing all the demands of the time that claimed him for legendary heroic deeds.

And that was the fate he chose with decision, passion, intelligence, vision and power; having the smile of those who are sure of their way, since the time of the call for a University Reform, until the shots that caused his death in the arms of Tina Modotti, and for the Revolution.

Mella was the founder, the guide, the strategist of the glorious beginning of the University Student Federation; of the pages of the “Alma Máter”; of the “José Martí” People’s University. And he took on the representation of his generation in the creation of the first communist party in Cuba having the Marxist-Leninism philosophy as its political, philosophical and social platform.

Julio Antonio could have followed the luck of those who are favored by life; however, he chose as his fate, the commitment with men who needed his fight, like a Prometheus in the 20th century. And Mella could be a semi-god whose entrails were devoured by birds of prey; but his example is raised from death every day and is turning into a symbol for the youth of today, in his vigorous, endless youth.

Those Cuban young people who need, as never before, to make character and loyalty the same as he, who never resigned his profound convictions; who didn’t allow that any mermaid song to seduce him, contaminating the principles of living and dying for the revolution.
